Kevin Mayer is a track and field athlete from France who specializes in decathlon and heptathlon. He has won the decathlon world title twice in 2022 and 2017. At the World Championships Oregon 2022, he got off to a slow start, finishing in sixth place after the day one. However, with time he improved and won on the final day with victories in the pole vault and javelin to claim his second gold medal. In addition, he won two Olympic silver medals in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020. In the indoor heptathlon, he is a world and European champion.
Mayer was born to André and Carole Mayer on February 10, 1992 in Argenteuil, a commune in the northwest suburbs of Paris. Thomas, Sébastien, and Thibault are his three brothers. His parents still live in La Roche-de-Glun, a little town by the Rhône in the southeast of the nation (Drôme department), where the family was raised. Mayer began his athletic career in the sports association EA Tain-Tournon, which is located near his hometown. Following the club’s merger with two other Drôme-based athletics organisations in 2013, Mayer continued to represent it through the newly formed EA Rhône Vercors 26-07. Since 2008, he has been training at the CREPS Montpellier, a facility for high-performance athletes.
Bertrand Valcin helped Kevin with his training till 2020. But because to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, a year before the Olympics, he broke ties with his longtime coach. Valcin had coached Mayer from his Montpellier training camp in southern France for 12 years. Under the guidance of his coach, Mayer won the Olympic silver medal at the Rio 2016 Games, the world championship in London the following year, and the world record of 9,126 points in September 2018. Mayer’s new trainer is Alexandre Bonacorsi.
