Athing Mu is an American middle-distance runner. She is the youngest woman in history to have won both Olympic and world titles in a single track and field competition. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Mu won the gold medal in the 800 metres at the age of 19, shattering both a national record set by Ajeé Wilson in 2017 and a continental under-20 record. She also participated in the women’s 4 x 400 m relay team with Sydney McLaughlin, Allyson Felix, and Dalilah Muhammad, leading her nation to a second gold medal victory. Due to her accomplishments in the year 2021, she was awarded the World Athlete Female Rising Star of the Year Award.
Athing Mu was born on June 8, 2002 and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. She is the second youngest of seven siblings. Her family is of South Sudanese heritage and her parents moved to the United States from that country. According to reports, Mu’s father is employed in the Pacific Northwest as a seafood processor. Her mother is a warehouse employee. In 2003, Athing’s parents got divorced. She started competing in track when she was six years old. Mu decided to participate for Trenton Track Club rather than the track team at her high school. In 2020, she graduated from Trenton Central High School. Malual, her older brother, also competes in track and field events at Penn State University.

It is also reported that she has endorsement deals with Tia Adeola’s brand. In the New York Fashion Week, she was seen in one of Tia’s designed outfits. Teni Tia Adeola is the brand’s creator and designer. She started the company in her dorm room over the summer of 2017 utilizing her love of the Renaissance and knowledge of art history as inspiration. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Culture and Media from The New School in May 2019 and is now based in New York.
