Erriyon Knighton is an American male sprinter who is just 19 years old, but he already has a very promising future. By shattering Usain Bolt’s junior 200m record, Erriyon Knighton cemented his place in history. The youngster triumphed in a startling 20:11, breaking Bolt’s 2003 record by 0:02 seconds. Again, even more impressively, it wasn’t even a wind-assisted run either, making his feat all the more remarkable. By crossing the finish line ahead of fellow American Trayvon Bromell, who was the favorite to win the 100m at the Tokyo Olympics Knighton was also up against an accomplished sprinter in their own right.

The 25-year-old Bromwell ran the fastest 200-meter time he had since 2015 but still finished behind Knighton. Even more remarkable is the fact that Knighton has only been sprinting for a few years; it isn’t exactly a long-standing passion of his. As he competed in the 200-meter semi-final of the Olympics while staring down his competitors and easing past them into the final, Knighton continued his impressive, impressive running onto the big stage.

At the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge on April 30, Knighton set an unofficial world junior record in the 200 meters by finishing in 19:49 seconds. In June, he earned 19.69 at the USA Outdoor T&F Championships. Knighton later went on to become the youngest-ever individual sprint medalist in Championship history when he won the bronze medal in the event at the World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, with a time of 19:80 seconds. With his 200m triumph on September 2 in Brussels, he also set a new record for the youngest Diamond League winner.

After agreeing to a contract to play professionally with Adidas, he dropped out of high school. He used to play wide receiver for his high school team in football. His coach advised him to switch to track and field, though. In his junior year of high school, at the age of 16, Knighton signed a sponsorship agreement with Adidas, forgoing his final two years of amateur competition at Hillsborough High. He also took part in the brand’s April 2021-launched Impossible Is Nothing campaign.
