Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir, a middle-distance runner from Kenya, was born on June 15, 1995. He is the 800 metre world champion for 2022 and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In the competition at the 2018 African Athletics Championships, Korir took home the silver medal. He has a personal best time of 1:42.05. As of November 2022, he was listed as the sixth-fastest athlete to ever compete in the 800 metres. At the competition, Korir has won the Diamond League three times.
Brother Colm O’Connell, an athletics coach also based in Iten, Kenya, persuaded Emmanuel Korir to transition from shorter sprints to the 400 metres in 2013. His 1:46.94 time in the Kenyan Championships finals earned him a scholarship to the University of Texas in El Paso, Texas, in the United States. He received coaching from Olympic 800 m champion Paul Ereng while playing for the UTEP Miners. For the 600 metres, Korir set a world record indoors in January 2017. He left UTEP that same year to get a professional running deal with Nike, Inc.
He did not go to the 800 metre finals at the World Athletics Championships in 2017 or 2019, however he did win the silver medal at the 2018 African Championships in Athletics. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Korir qualified to compete for Kenya and finished first in the 800 m race with a time of 1:45.06.
At the Eugene, Oregon, 2022 World Athletics Championships, he won the 800 m gold in a season’s best time of 1:43.71, completing the Olympic-world double. In the men’s 400-meter heats at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham the following month, he was disqualified for running in the wrong lane. Currently, he lives in El Paso, Texas.
