Christopher Nilsen, better known by the name name Chris Nilsen, is an American pole vault and high jump athlete. He has an Olympic silver medal from the pole vault event at the Summer Olympics 2020, with a jump of 5.97 m. Additionally, he earned the bronze medal at the 2022 World Indoor Championships and the silver medal in the 2022 World Championships. Nilsen has won the pole vault competition in NCAA Track and Field three times, and he has been named to the NCAA Division I First Team six times. Additionally, he holds the 5.80 m and 5.86 m indoor and outdoor school records for the pole vault for the South Dakota Coyotes.

Nilsen established the American and NACAC outdoor pole vault U-20 records of 5.75 meters and 5.70 meters. In 2017, Nilsen earned the Summit League’s awards for both outdoor and indoor field athletes. After clearing 5.80 m, he captured the Texas Relays in 2018.  Later, when he was competing against Sam Kendricks in the 2018 Drake Relays, he cleared 5.78 meters. For the eighth time in that season, Nilsen was chosen the Summit League student-athlete of the week. After winning his third straight league pole vault title, he was also given the prize for the men’s most amazing performance.

Chris was born to Mark and Karen Nilsen on January 13, 1998. His family’s background is not known. He was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, his birthplace. He also has a younger sister named Nicole Nilsen. Chris attended Park Hill High School in Kansas City, Missouri for his high school education. He shattered the American high school pole vault record with a clearance of 5.61 m at the Missouri Class 5 sectional championship. He is engaged to Breanna Swee, a Spanish native. The couple is planning to marry at the Laurel Ridge Barn on September 22, 2023.
