On her sixth nomination, Jamaican superstar and one of the greatest athletes of all-time Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finally claimed the World Sportswoman of the Year at the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards. Her recent accomplishments include winning the 100-meter women’s race for the fifth-time at the World Athletics Championships 2022 held in Eugene, Oregon. With three Olympic and ten World Championships gold medals to her name, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce described the award as one of the greatest honors of her career. The Laureus award nominees were selected by global media, while the winners were chosen through voting by the 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, consisting of athletes from the past five decades.

Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce made headlines at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games when she scripted history to become the first Caribbean woman to claim the women’s 100m gold medal. She won back-to-back 100m titles after defending her title in the London Olympics 2012. Popularly known as Pocket Rocket, Fraser-Pryce won her fifth world title in the 100m in the World Athletics Championships 2022, becoming the oldest sprinter to hold the World title at the age of 35. She has won a total of 14 world championships medals and eight Olympic Games medals. She is also the third quickest woman of all-time with a timing of 10.60 s.

Who else was awarded at the Laureus Sports Awards?

At the Laureus World Sports Awards in Paris, Lionel Messi captured the World Sportsman of the Year title. He also received a team of the year award for Argentina’s triumph at the FIFA World Cup 2022. This marks Messi’s second individual accomplishment after sharing the honor with Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton in 2020. He is the first athlete to win both the individual and team awards in the same year. Teenage tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who claimed victory at the US Open last year and rapidly rose through the ranks, was recognized with the Breakthrough of the Year award. This year’s Laureus World Sports Awards marked the first in-person event in Paris since 2020, as they were held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.
