The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is currently hosting the prestigious Inter State Athletics Championships 2023 from June 15 to June 19, 2023. This event brings together some of the nation’s finest athletes in track and field. This is the 62nd edition of this championship, and it holds additional significance as the performance here will determine who qualifies for the postponed Asian Games, which will take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), which is the regulatory authority for athletics in the country, has stated that participation in the Inter State Athletics Championships is a prerequisite for athletes seeking to represent India at the Asian Games. This requirement is expected to elevate the quality of the contests, as athletes will be aiming to excel and secure a coveted spot in the Asian Games 2023.
However, the championships will miss two of its star performers who have brought laurels to the nation on multiple occasions. These athletes are reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist Avinash Sable, who excels in 3000m steeplechase. The AFI has granted them waivers due to their stellar performances in recent elite competitions. Additionally, Neeraj Chopra had to step back from participating in the FBK Games and Paavo Nurmi Games due to a muscle tear. While, Avinash Sable launched his 2023 season at the Doha Diamond League and is currently in the United States for training purposes.
