Wayde van Niekerk set to make his debut in Bislett Games

South African sprinter Wayde van Niekerk will be seen in action in the Bislett Games 2023 on June 15, 2023, in Oslo, Norway. The Bislett Games 2023 is a part of the 14-events of the Wanda Diamond League, one of the most prominent athletics events in the world. Following a career-threatening injury, the 30-year-old van Niekerk has gradually started competing again. He grabbed the men’s 400-meter gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro in a timing of 43.03 seconds. His recent world-leading run of 44.17 seconds in the 400m has been lauded as indication that he is returning to his best form. He also announced that he will be taking part in the Bislett Games for the first time ever.

Since Wayde van Niekerk‘s participation announcement in the Bislett Games, the Bislett Stadion in Oslo will be conducting a competition on the same evening that will feature two athletes who are the holders of the world record. Olympic 400-meter hurdles gold medalist Karsten Warholm will also be participating in his signature event, i.e., the 400m hurdles. Since Karsten is also from Norway, he will receive a massive cheer and support from the packed home crowd. Karsten Warholm, who has already shattered the world record several times, will aim for a high-class performance as he eyes for the Wanda Diamond League 2023 title. Warholm is additionally the reigning European outdoor and indoor champion.

Which other stars will be featuring in the event?

The Bislett Games will feature competition from a number of other Norwegian superstars in addition to Karsten Warholm. The European indoor pole vault champion Sondre Guttormsen will participate in that event along with his brother Simen and Pal Haugen Lillefosse. The world and Olympic champion in the men’s 1500m Jakob Ingebrigtsen will also be racing. The 3000m race will feature European cross-country winner Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal.

The Bislett Games are an annual sporting competition hosted in Oslo’s Bislett Stadium. It was formerly an IAAF Golden League competition and is currently a Wanda Diamond League competition. The Diamond League is a premier calendar of sporting competitions that includes 14 of the top invitational events worldwide. The series, which debuted in 2010, is one of the most prestigious one-day meeting competitions offered by World Athletics (formerly the IAAF).

Bislett hosted its first international athletics competition in 1924. Bislett Stadium was utilised for Olympic speed skating events, although it is currently best known for hosting the Bislett Games athletics competition. The Bislett Games draw the top track and field competitors from around the globe. As many as 65 world records have already been established on the track.
