Leading athletes from around the world have gathered in an influential video to celebrate Earth Day 2023, which is on April 22, 2023, and emphasize this year’s subject, “Invest in Our Planet.” This year, World Athletics will increase and widen its efforts to reduce the sport’s negative environmental effects. The film was made available after a week of World Athletics events running up to the annual event on April 22. On April 18, the World Athletics highlighted the local organizing committee of the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon’s sustainability initiatives, which led to the event receiving Evergreen certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. 

The Head of Sustainability Bob Ramsak, the Director of the Oslo Bislett Games Meeting Steinar Hoen, and the Sustainability Lead and Athlete Coordinator for the Paavo Nurmi Games, Arttu Salonen, spoke on the Climate of Sports Podcast the following day (April 19) on sustainability measures in athletics on the occasion of the Earth Day 2023. The group also unveiled a brand-new carbon emission calculator designed exclusively for managers and organizers of athletics events.

Working with the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 organizers, the focus is on building sustainable legacies in areas such as health and welfare, urban regeneration, encouraging eco-friendly mobility, and improving air quality. The World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest will be the first World Athletics Championships Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to embrace the Athletics for a Better World Certification Standard, which will also be tried this year by several one-day meeting series events and Label road races.

Additionally, athletes are actively participating 21 athletes from 13 nations and the Athlete Refugee Team took part in the “Invest in Our Planet: Athlete Messages for Earth Day 2023” video, which was published on World Athletics’ social media channels. The goal of the video was to spread awareness of climate change and environmental issues on the occasion of the Earth Day 2023. 76% of athletes that participated in surveys taken at four World Athletics Championships competitions in 2022 expressed extreme or major concern about climate change. While 90% believed that World Athletics has a responsibility to play in promoting a more sustainable future.
