The Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne 2023 is set to take place on February 23, 2023, in Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium. Before 2012, the event was hosted at Olympic Park Stadium and was last staged under the previous name, Melbourne Track Classic, in early March 2016. The event was launched in the late 1980s at the Olympic Stadium and quickly earned a spot on the IAAF Grand Prix schedule. The event was improved and rebranded as the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne in 2023, conducted in honor of the legendary athlete as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Level meet.

The first Maurie Plant Meet will feature the fastest man in the world in 2022, Fredrick Lee Kerley, who will compete on February 23 at Lakeside Stadium. The defending 100m world champion and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist from the United States will lead a diverse group of international talents with the versatile athlete likely to win the Peter Norman Memorial 200m. In the 1500m, Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn and World Athletics Indoor Championships finalist Heather MacLean from the United States will face each other. However, they will face a stiff challenge from national record holder Jessica Hull, Australian all-time number three Georgia Griffith, and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Abbey Caldwell.

Athletics Australia is in charge of hosting the Maurie Plant Meet – Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium. This event is a part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series, which is the highest level on the Continental Tour calendar and offers over $200,000 in prize money and significant world ranking points. Plans are in place for the meet to become the highest profile yearly track and field event in the southern hemisphere. This is in order to bring Australians to the podium in Victoria 2026 and Brisbane 2032, with support from World Athletics and the Victorian Government.
