In the nation’s capital, more than 40,000 runners participated in the 26.2-mile race the previous year. And with even more supporters expected to attend, that number is expected to rise to around 50,000. Additionally, the race is being held in April for the first time since 2019, with the following years’ events taking place in October 2020, 2021, and 2022. The previous year’s top-level races were won by Amos Kipruto and Yalemzerf Yehualaw. As he anticipates 2023 to be his final year of competitive racing, Sir Mo Farah is also anticipated to participate in this year’s London Marathon.

The two leading contenders in this race are Kenenisa Bekele and Amos Kipruto. Despite being a three-time Olympic champion and having the second-fastest marathon time ever, Bekele has failed to win the London Marathon in his previous four attempts. The reigning champion is Kipruto. His victory last year marked his first success at a significant competition this far. In 2022, he also ran one of the fastest marathon miles in the London Marathon. Another athlete to keep an eye on is Kevin Kiptum, who ran his first marathon in 2022 in Valencia in the fastest time ever (2:01:53). Sifan Hassan is one of the most well-known female athletes because she won an unprecedented three medals at the 2020 Olympics.

Route for London Marathon 2023

The 26.12-mile race will start in Greenwich in Southeast London and will go to the Cutty Sark and the Shard. The next point marks about halfway through the race when runners will cross Tower Bridge. After Canary Wharf, the runners will proceed to Victoria Embankment and Westminster, where they will see the London Eye. And finally, before turning onto The Mall in direction of the finish line, which is just a few meters away from Buckingham Palace, they will pass Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
