If any last-minute miracles occur before the World Athletics (WA) deadline expires on Sunday, India’s women’s 4x400m relay team and mixed relay teams might not compete in the World Athletics Championships, which get underway in Budapest, Hungary, on August 19. The Indian quartet is ranked 32nd on WA’s Road to Budapest 23 list thanks to their season-best time of 3 minutes, 33.73 seconds, which earned them the bronze medal at the recent Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. The 16th and last position are held by the Dominican Republic, which on July 7 in San Salvador posted a time of 3:27.84s. The top eight finishers from the most recent competition in Oregon received the first eight seats, and the remaining eight will be filled based on the best results throughout the qualifying period.

To place in the top 16 in the world, the women’s relay team, which is currently in Sri Lanka, will need a better performance at their national meet this weekend in Diyagama, close to Colombo. With only the top 16 teams remaining, the mixed relay team is now in 17th place. In the Asian meet, India had a chance to beat Kenya’s time of 3:14.64s from June, but the quartet of Rajesh Ramesh, Aishwarya Mishra, Amoj Jacob, and Suba Venkatesan missed the mark and took home the gold in 3:14.70s. Meanwhile, the men’s 4×400-meter relay squad is on track to qualify. Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal, Mijo Chacko Kurian, and Ramesh are in 14th place after timing 3:01.80 seconds in Bangkok to finish second to Sri Lanka.

Other Indian Athlete

Ajay Kumar Saroj, the Asian champion in the men’s 1500 meters, has been temporarily cut but will withdraw if another Asian athlete advances in the global rankings. Saroj finished in position 56 after clocking a time of 3:41.51 seconds in Bangkok. Only 42 seats were filled out of the more than 50 competitors that achieved the automatic qualification standard of 3:34.20s based on the entrance standard, as only three entrants per country are permitted in each event, except wild cards.

World Athletics Championships 2023

The National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary is where the World Athletics Championships 2023, the nineteenth edition, will take place from August 19 to August 27, 2023. The 2007 World Championships were originally scheduled to be held in Budapest, but that bid was eventually withdrawn, and Osaka was chosen as the new host city. The championships will take place in Budapest’s National Athletics Centre, which was constructed specifically for this occasion and has a provisional capacity of 36,000 spectators. The winner of the 2022 Diamond League or the current world champion was designated as wild cards by World Athletics, and other competitors had to meet the entrance criterion to qualify.
