The biennial athletics competition for European athletes under the age of twenty-three will hold its 14th edition in 2023. The competition, organized by the European Athletics Association, is slated to take place in Espoo, Finland, from July 13–16, 2023. After Turku 1997 and Tampere 2013, Finland will host the European Athletics U23 Championships for the third time this year. To supposedly ease the transition between the U20 and senior ranks, the European Athletics U23 Championships were introduced in 1997. The championships were held in Turku for the inaugural competition, and they will return to Finland later this year when they are held in Espoo, a city outside of Helsinki, for four days from July 13 to 16.

Athletes to watch out for

Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain, the current European indoor and outdoor 800m champion, is one athlete who has her sights set on the competition. To increase her speed before the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, the 21-year-old intends to compete in the 400m. With Silja Kosonen and Saga Vanninen moving up to the U23 ranks, this could also be a very successful championship for Finland, the tournament’s hosts. In 2021, the hammer and heptathlon events at the European and World U20 Athletics Championships, respectively, resulted in gold medals for both athletes. Additionally, in Espoo’s middle-distance competitions, keep an eye out for Finland’s Ilona Mononen, the European U20 3000m champion.

Highlights from the most recent European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn included Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh defending his discus championship with a championship record of 67.45 meters and Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh winning the high jump gold with a 2.00 meters clearance, also a championship record. Mahuchikh, who is just 21 years old, is qualified to defend her championship in Espoo. In Tallinn, the German men’s 4x100m team set a new record by winning in 38.17, shattering six championship records as well as one European U23 record.
