Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli headed a top three in under 27:00 while Sheila Chepkirui nearly broke the women’s world mark at the Brasov Running Festival 10km on Sunday. Kipkorir won the men’s race in 26:51, moving him up to sixth on the global 10km all-time list, and his Kenyan teammate Chepkirui timed 30:07, just six seconds behind the women-only world record. The competition took place at the CORESI neighborhood in Brasov city in Romania The race is also a World Athletics Elite Label road race.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist in 5000m Kipkorir reached the 5km mark in 13:27 and kept that pace all the way to the finish to break the Romanian all-comers record of 28:40 established in Brasov last year. Kipkorir dominated a Kenyan top six, with the top seven all finishing in under 28 minutes. In the women’s event, Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medalist Chepkirui won easily, finishing 23 seconds ahead of compatriot Agnes Jebet Ngetich, with Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat barely a second behind in 30:31.Chepkirui, who established her personal best of 29:46 in a mixed race in Valencia in 2020, broke the Romanian all-comers record of 32:12 set in Brasov last year by clocking a time of 30.07.

As a special visitor and event ambassador, Kenyan marathon legend Mary Keitany ran in the children’s race and gave medals to the winners. In an interview with Romanian media, she stated that she really enjoyed the city, the weather, the atmosphere, and the race. “The track is fantastic, and the weather is perfect for world-class running,” she added. Considered as one of the greatest Kenyan athletes, Mary has claimed multiple medals in World Marathon majors and World Half Marathon majors.
