The 32nd Southeast Asian Games will take place in Cambodia from May 5 to May 17, and 11 countries from the entire region will compete for glory there. A total of 581 events will take place during the Games, with athletics being one of the most anticipated. On April 6, the marathon and race walk serve as the off-field opening events for the Southeast Asian Games athletics competition. The women’s and men’s 4 x 400m relay finals will take place on Friday, May 12, at Morodok Techo Stadium in Phnom Penh, where all subsequent track and field competitions will take place.

Athletes to watch out for

Lalu Muhammad Zohri from Indonesia should be closely watched when it comes to athletes to watch. In 2018, he made history by winning the 100-meter gold at the World U20 Championships. With his victory, Zohri became the first male Indonesian medalist in the competition’s history. In 2019, he followed it up by taking silver at the Asian Championships. Shereen Vallabuoy of Malaysia is another athlete to keep an eye on in the women’s 400m after setting the record for the fastest Malaysian over the distance with a time of 51.08 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays Athletics Championship. In Cambodia, she will compete in the 400-meter run and the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Singapore’s Shanti Pereira brings a lot of experience to the sprints, as the 200-meter champion at the 2015 and 2021 Southeast Asian Games had already competed under the intense pressure of an Olympic event in Tokyo 2020 (in 2021). Malaysian athlete Irfan Shamsuddin is a five-time Southeast Asian Games discus champion. He has been unbeatable in competitions since 2013.
