When the Blackpool Combat Club confronts The Elite at Blood and Guts on July 19, CM Punk reportedly made a pitch to join the group as its fifth member.
Punk has primarily been exclusive to Collision since his comeback to AEW in June, and he hasn’t had any contact with The Elite since their shocking breakup last September. Since Punk resumed his career this year with Tony Khan’s business, he has been concentrating on winning the Owen Hart competition.
After defeating Samoa Joe on the most recent Saturday show, Punk will face Ricky Starks in the championship match the following week, but will he shift his emphasis to Blood and Guts after that? Seemingly not.
It was first claimed by Voices of Wrestling that Punk had proposed joining the contest to help Bryan Danielson’s team, but it now appears that the mystery partners for both teams have been decided. Punk’s story mode battle with The Elite seems imminent, but it won’t likely happen in Blood and Guts.

“The Cult of Personality” star CM Punk famously left WWE in 2014 after becoming dissatisfied with the organization, and he claimed for years that he would never wrestle again. That changed with the introduction of AEW. However, with his connection with AEW obviously in jeopardy and a return to WWE seeming impossible, Punk seemed to be headed back into retirement.
Despite this uncertainty, Punk returned to AEW for the first episode of Collision on June 17th at the United Center in his birthplace of Chicago. In a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, veteran writer Dave Meltzer claimed that he always anticipated Punk to return, even if he wasn’t sure where.
“I did not know 100% [Punk] would be back in AEW, but I knew he would be back wrestling somewhere,” Meltzer said. “I know people in WWE, it was like, they’re not going to take him. And it’s like, ‘Maybe yes, maybe no,’ but it was immaterial because Tony [Khan] wasn’t going to release him. The thing is, at some point, I thought he would be back and probably in AEW. It didn’t happen exactly the way I expected, but it did happen, and it’s because he can draw, and a guy who has a history of drawing will always get that chance until the wheels are totally off. That’s all.”
