Saturday will be the last day of the Owen Hart Tournament, and the main event will feature CM Punk and Ricky Starks. Even if there isn’t a title chance at stake, momentum can be gained by coming out on top of the event. Punk has defeated Satoshi Kojima and Samoa Joe in singles competition since his comeback, and he has to win the tournament if he wants to reclaim the championship he never ever lost.

In spite of the fact that some may argue, “I thought the point of CM Punk coming to AEW was to put over young talent,” Ricky Starks still has a chance to flourish. This reminds me of when Ricky Starks challenged MJF for the AEW World Championship at AEW Dynamite: Winter is Coming. No one expected Starks to win the match before it started, but after a few close calls and some enthusiastic cheering from the audience, the impossible became possible.

Since nobody believes Starks will win an uphill battle against the show’s headliner, the same match structure should be applied at Collision. Starks can receive his big break, which will help propel him up the AEW mid-card, while CM Punk handles the important stuff.

Why CM Punk needs to win?

When he wins, Punk creates an intriguing dynamic by having to lug around not only the bag containing his AEW World Championship, but also the Owen Hart Cup and the pink belt. For Punk to feel like he belongs in the main event scene again, rather than as the ‘hot tag’ man in an eight-man tag match, he has to see himself in action on AEW television.

Punk would have an instant incentive to fight MJF for the AEW World Championship if he were to win additional hardware to begin off his third stint in the promotion. If AEW uses the pink belt Adam Cole won last year, Punk would have more medals than MJF.

I refuse to believe that CM Punk, fresh off his return to Collision as the show’s main attraction, should be putting over Ricky Starks, and Punk must win in order to continue to build heat by defeating a top babyface. If we ever see Punk vs. MJF again, it would make a lot of sense, given the crowd’s reaction to MJF, for CM Punk to play the heel and MJF to play the babyface.
