“It’s really just the people who were sure Khan would have failed, were proven wrong, and now cling to TNA saying they were just as successful when clearly that’s laughable.”
Before AEW came out, TNA/IMPACT Wrestling was WWE’s best rival in North America since WCW went out of business. At different times in its history, the promotion was clearly number two, and it even tried to bring back the “Monday Night Wars” by running shows on Monday nights against Raw.
Some former WWE stars, like Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, Mick Foley, and others, also wrestled for TNA, with different degrees of success. But while they were with the company, wrestlers like Samoa Joe and AJ Styles became some of the best-known rivals in the world.
Even so, TNA never really caught up to WWE, and in recent years, AEW has surpassed them as the biggest competitor to the sports entertainment giant. During a recent conversation on Twitter, Dave Meltzer shot down claims that TNA had an average of close to two million watchers a week in late 2009. He also said that it’s “laughable” how some fans try to exaggerate TNA’s success to make fun of AEW.
