In December, a welterweight matchup that has been in the works for three years could finally happen. Robbie Lawler, a former UFC welterweight champion, has committed to facing Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC 282, according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.

Lawler had been scheduled to face the Argentinian back in December 2019, but the fight was cancelled due to Santiago’s withdrawal due to a staph illness. The decision was made by the promotion at the time to also remove Robbie off the UFC 245 programme without providing a substitute opponent for the former champion.

Most recently, Lawler (29-15-1 NC) got TKO’d by Bryan Barberena at UFC 276 last month. Before that, the 40-year-old had scored the only win of his career in his past six outings, when he TKO’d Nick Diaz, in September 2021. That victory made Robbie snap a four-fight losing skid, with defeats to Rafael dos Anjos, Ben Askren, Colby Covington and Neil Magny.

Also in dire need of a win, Ponzinibbio (28-6) will look to snap a two-fight losing skid, with split decision losses to Geoff Neal and Michel Pereira. The 35-year-old’s last win happened just last year when he scored a unanimous decision over the prospect, Miguel Baeza.

UFC 282 on December 10

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will host UFC 282 on December 10, 2022, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, which is a part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area in the United States. Although it hasn’t been declared by the promotion, the company is planning a rematch of the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship between current champion Ji Procházka and previous champion Glover Teixeira. They most recently squared off in June at UFC 275, with Procházka taking home the victory (and championship) through fifth-round submission.
