Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar, the main accused in the murder case of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar, has been granted four-day interim bail on humanitarian grounds by a Delhi court. The court allowed him to perform the last rites of his father, who had passed away on Sunday. Kumar had been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021, following his arrest in connection with the murder of Dhankar. The court granted him bail on the condition that he would not threaten the prosecution witnesses, tamper with evidence, indulge in any crime, and share his phone’s live location whenever required by the investigating officer.

In addition, at least two security personnel have to accompany him round the clock, taking into account the threat perception of the witnesses and ensuring the safety and security of Kumar. The entire expenditure of deployment of security personnel or policemen for keeping surveillance and security of the accused will be borne by his family members, as per the court’s order. The court directed Kumar to surrender before the jail superintendent concerned after the expiry of the interim bail period, i.e., on March 10. The applicant or accused will be released on interim bail from March 6 to March 9, only on furnishing personal bonds of the sum of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties of the like amount.

What are the public’s views on the bail?

The court’s decision to grant interim bail to Sushil Kumar has garnered mixed reactions from the public. While some people have expressed sympathy for his loss and appreciate the court’s decision, others have criticized it as an example of the privileged getting away with murder. The case has attracted widespread media attention, given Kumar’s status as an Olympic medallist and the shocking nature of the crime. The murder of Sagar Dhankar has sent shockwaves throughout the Indian wrestling community and raised concerns about the safety of athletes.

In connection with an alleged property dispute, Kumar and others are suspected of attacking Sagar Dhankar, the former junior national wrestling champion, and his companions Jai Bhagwan and Bhagat on May 4, 2021, in the parking lot of the city’s Chhatrasal Stadium. Afterwards, Dhankar passed away from his wounds. The trial in the case is still ongoing, and the court’s decision to grant interim bail to Kumar does not imply any judgment on his guilt or innocence. The court has merely granted him temporary relief to perform his father’s last rites, taking into account the humanitarian aspect of the case.
