Aman Sehrawat was born in Jhajjar, Haryana, in the small village of Birohar. His mother Kamlesh was a homemaker, and his father Sombir Sehrawat was a poor farmer. He has a younger sister. When he lost both of his parents, he was only 11 years old. Grandfather Mangeram Sehrawat looked after Aman after the passing of his parents.

The last time Aman Sehrawat’s uncle and cousin dropped him off at the akhada, was about eight years ago. When the wrestler’s mother, who had been experiencing depression, passed away, he was ten years old. Aman’s father passed away a year later, having been profoundly affected by the unexpected death of his wife.

Life as a Wrestler and his struggle

Aman Sehrawat was unaware that he would continue this illustrious tradition at the time. He initially lacked strength and quickness. Although Aman had some natural athletic ability, he had to develop it. He did this by training constantly. “He had put all the eggs in one basket.” Aman was aware that if wrestling did not work out for him, he would have no other options. He would work extremely hard, and the coach’s job was to help him get stronger by feeding him a healthy diet in addition to instructing him on the proper techniques. He benefited from being surrounded by the greatness of other big wrestlers in addition to the doodh-ghee-badam diet given to wrestlers.

Families of numerous other boys have sent them to Chhatrasal for training. To help them with their diet, their parents typically brought milk and other food from home. Aman didn’t have anything like that.  Though fate may have dealt him a bad hand, Aman Sehrawat soon immersed himself in the arduous lifestyle of a wrestler, rising before dawn to grapple in the mud and practice on the mat. It’s the lifestyle that has produced winners. Undisputedly, Chhatrasal is the premier wrestling facility in India. Olympic medalists Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Bajrang Punia, and Ravi Dahiya have all trained at this North Delhi facility throughout their entire sporting careers.

Achievements

For the young man who had grown up in extreme hardship off the mat, things soon started to fall into place. Before winning the Asian title in the same age group, it all started with a bronze medal at the World Cadet Championship in 2018. Aman Sehrawat continued to win national championships in 2021 and 2022, respectively, in the Under-23 Asian and World competitions.

He recently won a gold medal for India at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships, making him the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the U23 Wrestling Championships. Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medalist, was Aman’s idol and the reason he decided to pursue a career in wrestling. The bronze he won at the Ranking Series in Zagreb was his first senior medal, but Thursday’s gold will go down as his greatest success to date.
