On Friday, the final day of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana, only Indian wrestler Anirudh Kumar (125 kg) won a medal.
Anirudh Kumar, a freestyle wrestler, won the bronze medal on the final day to bring India’s total number of medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Following his victory over Sardorbek Kholmatov of Uzbekistan (12-2) in the medal match on Friday, Anirudh Kumar earned the bronze medal in the 125 kg men’s freestyle division. In the qualification round, Anirudh Kumar defeated Taiki Yamamoto of Japan 8-2; however, he fell to eventual finalist Yusup Batirmurzaev of Kazakhstan 2-0 and advanced to the bronze medal match. None of the other four wrestlers from India who competed that day advanced to the medal round.

Anirudh won his first senior international medal by out-technically defeating Sardorbek Kholmatov of Uzbekistan (12-2). He started his campaign with a convincing 8-2 win over Japan’s Taiki Yamamoto before falling to Kazakhstan’s Yusup Batirmurzaev in the quarterfinals by a score of (2-0) in just 31 seconds. Anirudh gave everything he had in the bronze medal playoff match against Kholmatov, winning with 30 seconds left in the opening frame. Anirudh is a product of Chhatrasal Stadium and a native of Sonipat’s Purkhas village. The 21-year-old captured bronze at the cadet Asian and World Championships in 2019 and finished third again at the junior world championships the following year in 2021.
After losing to Bahrain’s Magomed Sharipov in the 92 kg freestyle quarterfinals, Olympian Deepak Punia went home empty-handed. When Kirin Kinoshita of Japan advanced to the final in the 74 kg category, Yash Tushir, who had lost to Kirin in the qualification round, advanced to the repechage round. The Korean Gong Byung-min defeated Yash Tushir 11-1 in the repechage round. In the 61 kg quarterfinals, Pankaj Malik was eliminated, and in the 86 kg freestyle quarterfinals, Jonty Kumar was eliminated. Aman Sehrawat, an Indian freestyle wrestler, won the only gold medal on Thursday. The women’s wrestlers brought home seven medals, while the Greco-Roman wrestlers took home four.
