Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat became the men’s 57kg freestyle champion at the Asian wrestling championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on Thursday, beating Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov 9-4 in the final. Sehrawat, the defending World under-23 champion, encountered a stiff challenge from Smanbekov, who took an early 2-1 lead with a takedown. Sehrawat eventually gained the advantage and won the opening period owing to his attacking strategy. 

Aman Sehrawat then used a double leg attack to get two additional points, but also gave up two points. The Indian wrestler persisted in his attacks and earned four more points to win his first-ever Asian championship. With 39 seconds left in the match, Sehrawat sustained a wound above his right eye, but he remained composed and finished the match to win the men’s 57kg gold medal and became the first Indian to do so at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023.

Aman Sehrawat previously earned a bronze medal in the Zagreb Open Championships, beating Zane Raye Rhodes Richards of the United States 10-4 in the bronze medal match. At the U23 Worlds last year, he scripted history by becoming the first-ever gold medalist from India by defeating Turkish opponent Ahmet Duman, who had won the junior European silver medal, by a score of 12-4. In addition, he also owns the U23 Asian Championship gold medal and the U-20 Asian Championship silver medal. With this win at Kazakhstan, Sehrawat continues to add to his long list of triumphs in the world of wrestling.

At the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023, Deepak Mirka (79 kg) also won a bronze medal for India in addition to Sehrawat’s victory. He defeated Mongolia’s Byambadorj Bat Erdene 4-1 in the bronze medal match, but fell 0-10 to Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Abdulrakhmonov in the quarterfinals. Deepak defeated Tajikistan’s Shuhrat Bozorov 12-1 in the bronze medal match. Deepak Nehra (97 kg), a medalist at the Commonwealth Games, fell to Makhsud Veysalov of Uzbekistan 9–12 in his bronze medal match. With this, India has now bagged 12 medals in this edition, with one gold, three silver, and nine bronze medals.
