Sangeeta Phogat, Sushma Shokeen, and Sarita Mor were some of the big names that emerged victorious in the women’s freestyle on the concluding day of the National Wrestling Championships 2022. Sangeeta, assisted by her World and Olympic medalist husband Bajrang Punia, held off Sumitra’s challenge to retain the women’s 62kg title. Sangeeta, one of the Phogat sisters, improved her rhythm with each battle after sustaining an ACL injury roughly six months ago and saved her best for the final. In the first period, she had a two-point lead before Sumitra tied the game. Sangeeta regained control with a right leg assault that resulted in a takedown. Her lead was boosted by a quick and brilliant response that read the scores as 6-2. She used her strength to thwart Sumitra’s last effort and won the match 8-2.

Sushma Shokeen overcame Pooja Jat to win the 53kg title. In the final,  Pooja earned a point due to Sushma’s passivity but Sushma countered with a great takedown and pinned Pooja. Pooja’s heated protest brought the match to a halt. In the women’s 59 kg, Sarita Mor, the world championship 2021 bronze medalist and two-time Asian Championship gold medalist headed into the championship as the favorite and didn’t disappoint. She got past Delhi’s Simran in the final to win the prestigious gold medal.
