On the second day of the National Wrestling Championship 2022, Manjeet got the better of fellow Armyman L. Sayon, representing Manipur, to win his first title in the 55kg Greco Roman category in the National championships at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Thursday. In the opening session of the final, the 30-year-old Manjeet from Jhajjar in Haryana, took a 5-0 lead and used his great defensive abilities to maintain the lead and secure a fantastic victory.

Gyanender Gyani Dahiya, the 2019 Asian bronze medalist, battled to defeat Vikram of Maharashtra 3-1. With this, he successfully defended his 60 kg title. Gyanender, one of the most reliable grapplers in Greco Roman wrestling, had also clinched the bronze medal at the 2019 Ranking competition in Italy. Post his win at the Nationals, he stated that he has been struggling due to lack of sponsorship despite winning multiple medals in the Olympic weight category.

In the men’s 77kg, Sajan Bhanwala defeated SSCB’s Deepak to claim the gold medal at the championships. The bronze medals were won by Chhagan Meena and Karan. Earlier, in the month of October, Sajan had scripted history by becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win a medal at the U-23 World Championships. He defeated Dmytro Vasetskyi of Ukraine on the basis of ‘criteria’ to become the winner in the bronze medal match.
