John Gordon Perrin is a retired player for the Canadian national volleyball team who currently competes for the Turkish club Halkbank Spor Kulübü. Born in Creston, British Columbia, on August 17, 1989, to parents Dave Perrin and Ruth Boehmer, John grew up in a sports-oriented family. He has a brother named Marshall, while his two sisters Joan and Alicia played for Canada’s national women’s volleyball team. John pursued his higher education at Thompson Rivers University from 2007 to 2010, where he also honed his volleyball skills.
During his tenure at Thompson Rivers University from 2007 to 2010, Perrin was a key player for the Wolfpack men’s volleyball team. His performance advanced the team to clinch a bronze medal at the 2008 CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship. In the 2009-10 season, his prowess on the court earned him the title of Thompson Rivers University Athlete of the Year. Perrin, in the 2011/12 season, became a part of the Turkish club Arkas Spor. He played a crucial role in leading the club to a runner-up finish in the national championship during his first year. This period saw him helping his team win two titles in the Turkish Men’s Volleyball League in 2013 and 2015, and earning the Best Server accolade for the 2013/2014 season.
In 2015, he joined the Volley Piacenza, but his season was prematurely ended due to knee surgery in March 2015. The 2016/17 season witnessed him sign with the Polish club Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, reuniting him with his national teammate Gavin Schmitt. Despite extending his contract with Asseco Resovia Rzeszów in April 2017 to stay in PlusLiga, Perrin publicly expressed his intention to move to the Chinese league in July 2017. This resulted in a contractual dispute with Resovia, who sought FIVB’s intervention in what they considered an unprofessional situation. Ultimately, Perrin departed for Beijing Volleyball as he broke his agreement with the Polish club.
In the international circuit, he began his journey with the Canada men’s youth national team in 2006. He joined the senior national team in 2011 and has been a consistent member of the FIVB World League squad since 2012 as he played a significant role in Canada’s record-breaking 5th place finish in 2013. He was instrumental in winning the bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and was part of the team that secured 5th place at the 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2021, Perrin was selected for Canada’s Olympic team for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, where the team advanced to the quarterfinals but was defeated by the Russian Olympic Committee. Following the Olympics, in November 2021, Perrin announced his retirement from the national team.
