Sean O’Malley has offered his perspective on Jamahal Hill’s decision to vacate the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship due to an injury. Hill earned the 205-pound title earlier this year with a victory over Glover Teixeira. However, his plans for a title defense have been halted as he suffered a ruptured Achilles during a basketball game held during UFC’s International Fight Week.

Sean O’Malley avoids playing basketball

During a recent episode of the “TimboSugarShow,” Sean O’Malley and his coach Tim Welch discussed their fight week routine. O’Malley admitted to Welch that he frequently declines invitations to play basketball during fight week to avoid potential injuries or distractions that could affect his performance in the Octagon.

“He keeps inviting me to that s***. I’m like, ‘Dude, I can’t do that.’ I told him,” O’Malley said.

Sean O’Malley gives his word on the light heavyweight division

According to O’Malley, the light heavyweight division has been in disarray ever since Jon Jones last fought in the weight class back in 2020.

“I know that division’s been f****** crazy since Jon Jones hasn’t been there,” O’Malley added. “That sucks.”

Since Jon Jones moved up to heavyweight, the light heavyweight division has been plagued by unfortunate circumstances. The title has been vacated twice, and a main event title fight between Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev for the vacant championship ended in a draw.

Hill poised to get his belt back

Despite being only 32 years old, Jamahal Hill showed great determination to retain the UFC light heavyweight title while recovering from his injury. However, he acknowledged the practicality of vacating the belt, understanding the impact of his injury on his ability to defend the championship.

Jamahal Hill expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UFC management for their continuous support during this difficult time. He disclosed that the promotion has reassured him of the opportunity to compete for the title again once he fully recovers and is back to optimal health.

“On my road to recovery, I’ve been promised that I will fight for my title immediately as soon as I am able, as well as the other things that come with that,” Hill said. “Yeah, man – it’s just part of the story.”
