Robbie Lawler has dedicated over two decades of his life to the intense world of professional fighting. As he prepares to step into the octagon for UFC 290, Lawler is ready to bid farewell to active competition for good. With a fighting record of 29 wins and 16 losses, including a reign as a former UFC welterweight champion, Lawler has left an indelible mark on the MMA landscape since his debut in April 2001.

Now, more than 22 years later, Lawler will hang up his gloves following his highly anticipated matchup against Niko Price. This exhilarating showdown will take place at the electrifying T-Mobile Arena before the main card goes live on pay-per-view.

Robbie Lawler knows it’s time to hang gloves

As Robbie Lawler approached the age of 41, he grappled with the inevitability of his impending departure from the sport he dedicated his life to. The weight of this realization weighed heavily on his mind, adding a layer of perplexity to his thoughts.

“It’s just a feeling I got over time,” Lawler told the media. “I’ve been doing this a long time. Accomplished a lot. Just felt it was time.”

Despite his decision to retire from active competition, Robbie Lawler emphasized that he will remain involved in the sport moving forward. In recent years, Lawler has embraced the role of a coach and mentor to up-and-coming fighters at Kill Cliff FC in South Florida. This experience has allowed him to pass on his vast knowledge and expertise to the next generation, a role he intends to continue.

“I’m definitely going to be around the sport,” Lawler said. “This sport’s given so much to me. The reason I am where I am today and been able to last this long is because of all the people helping me. So I’m going to give back all these little tidbits over time and we have a really good gym at Kill Cliff FC and help guys get stronger so they can make money and compete at a high level. That’s what I feel martial arts is about, is to give back and showing techniques.”

Robbie Lawler will still hit the gym

While the gym will continue to hold significance in Lawler’s life, he recognizes that it won’t encompass everything. Moving forward, he plans to prioritize spending ample time with his family, cherishing those precious moments together.

“I would say there was fear because it’s freaking unknown,” Lawler said. “I’ve been training and competing my whole life, even when I was supposed to be in high school and middle school, I was training on how to get better at wrestling or football or fighting when I should be doing my homework. That’s where I’ve always been.”
