Ferguson’s unexpected career decline, which would have been hard to fathom in 2020, now appears to align with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s foresight. In a post-UFC 249 interview, Khabib candidly expressed his belief that the American fighter would face more defeats in the near future. Little did anyone know at the time that Khabib’s prediction would indeed come true,
“He’s gonna come back, and someone gonna beat him again,” Khabib said. “When you take damage like this, you’re never gonna be [the] same.”
At UFC 249, Ferguson endured a barrage of heavy shots, despite managing to score a flash knockdown in the first round. However, the remainder of the fight witnessed Gaethje’s dominance, with Ferguson struggling to find his footing. With mere minutes left on the clock, the referee intervened, calling an end to the bout, sealing Gaethje’s victory.
Since that pivotal defeat against Gaethje, Ferguson has encountered significant challenges in attempting to reclaim his former prowess. The aftermath saw him grappling with back-to-back unanimous decision losses, first against Charles Oliveira and then against Beneil Dariush.
Subsequently, Ferguson went head-to-head with Michael Chandler at UFC 274 in Phoenix, Arizona. During the first round, fleeting glimpses of the former fighter’s brilliance emerged, enticing viewers to entertain the possibility of witnessing El Cucuy’s triumphant return to glory.
