Usman Kumaru sees Thompson as the right opponent

Kumaru believes that facing Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is the most sensible option at the moment as Thompson is in need of an opponent. Usman acknowledges Thompson’s long-standing presence in the sport, making him an appealing and challenging adversary due to his unique fighting style. Additionally, Usman sees Thompson as one of those renowned fighters from his era with whom he has never had the chance to compete.

“I’ve done everything there is to do. The only guy that, to be honest, that even make sense right now is Wonderboy, because he needs an opponent,” Usman told TMZ Sports. “Wonderboy’s been around for so long, and he’s just that name to where it’s always a good fight. His style is very, very difficult to fight. He’s just one of those names, he’s in my era, that I never really got to fight.”

Usman Kumaru looking to make a solid comeback

Thompson, who decided not to participate in the UFC 291 pay-per-view (PPV) fight card due to his opponent’s failure to make weight, has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with facing opponents who solely aim to take him down and control the fight for three rounds.

At 36 years old, Usman (20-3) is determined to bounce back from consecutive defeats at the hands of his long-standing rival Leon Edwards, which led to him losing his 170-pound title as “The Nigerian Nightmare.” On the other hand, Thompson, aged 40, boosted his record to 17-6-1 with a victory over Kevin Holland at UFC Orlando.
