In a stunning turn of events at UFC on ESPN 49 in Las Vegas, Francisco Prado made a triumphant return to the Octagon with a first-round TKO victory over Ottman Azaitar. But Prado’s post-fight declaration that he will advance to the welterweight category was what really stole the show.
Prado, a 21-year-old rising star from Argentina, expressed his decision during a backstage interview with Daniel Cormier after initially startling everyone by suggesting he was retiring. He quickly clarified that it was a retirement from the lightweight division, not from the sport altogether. Prado cited advice from the UFC Performance Institute as the primary reason for his weight class change.

Prado’s history of competing in multiple weight classes

Since Prado has previously competed at both welterweight and lightweight, his switch to 170 pounds is not entirely unexpected. His professional debut in mid-2019 took place in the welterweight division, but he subsequently fluctuated between the two weight classes, even engaging in fights at a catchweight.

Speaking at the post-fight news conference, Prado highlighted Prado’s evolution as a fighter and the message his victory over Azaitar conveyed. He emphasized his versatility, stating, “The message is I’m really complete because I was a grappler – now I’m a striker, and now I think I am a good wrestler. In a few years, I don’t have a doubt that I will be a champion.”

Prado’s choice to switch to welterweight creates fresh career opportunities. It enables him to compete against foes who are more fitted to match his power and size. Furthermore, the change aligns with the recommendations of the UFC Performance Institute, a renowned facility known for its expertise in optimizing athletes’ performance and health.

With his impressive victory over Azaitar, Prado has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the lightweight division. He is a tough opponent in any weight class because of his skill in grappling, hitting, and wrestling. Prado wants to go up to welterweight to demonstrate to potential opponents that he is a complete fighter and can compete with the best in the division.
