Dustin Poirier, the former UFC interim lightweight champion, is prepared to put his loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 behind him. During the event, Poirier suffered a head-kick knockout defeat in his pursuit of the vacant BMF title. Despite a promising start in the fight, Gaethje managed to land a decisive head kick that swiftly brought the bout to an end.

Poirier’s performance at UFC 291 left much to be desired, especially considering his ambition to retain the BMF belt in south Florida. When it comes to his future fights, Poirier has been evasive, having already competed against numerous top contenders in the lightweight division. It seems he might need to secure a couple of wins before being considered for another title shot.

Dustin Poirier looking for new challenges

However, in light of this uncertainty, Poirier appears receptive to exploring fresh challenges and seizing new opportunities if it means getting more chances to fight. In a recent tweet, Poirier hinted at his next move in the UFC.

“Ok I’ll move up,” Poirier tweeted.

Unbeaten contender Shavkat Rakhmonov wasted no time dropping a hint that he might be Dustin Poirier’s inaugural opponent in the welterweight division. Originally slated to face Kelvin Gastelum on September 16th, Rakhmonov’s plans were disrupted when Gastelum pulled out due to injury.

The status of Rakhmonov’s participation in the event remains uncertain, with the possibility of either staying on the card or being rescheduled for a future date.

Poirier wanted this move for years

In any case, a matchup between Poirier and Rakhmonov holds merit for both fighters. Poirier has been toying with the idea of moving to the welterweight division for some time now, with the most recent provocation coming from Colby Covington’s callout at UFC 272. Such a bout could prove intriguing and beneficial for both parties involved.

With an impressive undefeated record of 17-0 in his MMA career, Rakhmonov has been on a roll, securing notable victories over Geoff Neal and Neil Magny. His success places him on the verge of a welterweight title shot, and a victory against Poirier could elevate him to the forefront of the championship conversation.

If Poirier is genuinely considering a move to the welterweight division, a matchup against Rakhmonov could be the ideal choice. This potential bout might provide further insight into both Poirier and Rakhmonov’s future appearances in the Octagon, and fans could expect more clarity on the matter in the near future.
