According to Daniel Cormier, Tony Ferguson must take a significant leap in the level of competition if he wishes to continue his UFC journey. Following his most recent defeat to Bobby Green at UFC 291, Ferguson’s losing streak extended to six consecutive fights, with three of those ending in stoppage losses.

Before the fight, Ferguson remained hopeful of pursuing UFC championship glory. Cormier’s evaluation of Ferguson this time was not as severe as his previous critiques, but he believes that “El Cucuy” may no longer be able to keep up with the top-tier competitors in the division.

Daniel Cormier wants Ferguson to seek a lesser challenge

During his ESPN show “DC & RC,” Cormier pointed out that despite Ferguson’s pre-fight claim of being five fights away from the title, he has now suffered six consecutive losses. Cormier acknowledged that Ferguson’s defeats came against tough opponents like Diaz, Chandler, Dariush, Oliveira, and Bobby Green.

However, he emphasized that Ferguson, who is now 39 years old, seems to be facing a physical limitation despite his unwavering fighting spirit. It appears that his body might not be able to keep up with the demands his mind places on it.

“Five fights to the title, that was his catchline all week, but now he’s lost six in a row,” Cormier said on his ESPN show “DC & RC.” “Look man, this guy is not losing to terrible fighters. He’s lost to (Nate) Diaz, (Michael) Chandler, (Beneil) Dariush, (Charles) Oliveira, and Bobby Green now. But the reality is, he’s 39 years old, and while he still has a ton of heart to fight, it just does not seem like his body is allowing him to do everything that his mind is telling him to do.”

Cormier talks about Ferguson’s physical limitations

Additionally, Cormier expressed his view that due to Ferguson’s physical limitations, it might be appropriate for him to consider two options: either request the UFC to match him against less challenging opponents, or explore fighting opportunities outside the organization. Cormier acknowledged that Ferguson might not agree with his assessment, but he believes that the desire to fight is still present in him.

However, the concern lies in the fact that his body seems unable to respond as his mind instructs it to, leading Cormier to contemplate the possibility of Ferguson stepping away from the sport.

Following his loss to Green, Ferguson didn’t openly express any plans to retire from the sport. Instead, he revealed his intention to hold a meeting with the UFC officials to discuss the path he wants to take in his future career.
