Charles Oliveira is eager for a grappling showdown against an MMA superstar later this year. Georges St-Pierre, the former two-division UFC champion, is slated to participate in the forthcoming UFC Fight Pass Invitational event on December 14 in Las Vegas, with his opponent still to be announced. “Do Bronx” is now expressing his interest in the opportunity to compete against the esteemed Canadian legend.

“That would be very important for me, you know?” Oliveira said on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast. “To be doing a jiu-jitsu match, a grappling match, would definitely be important for me, because I love the art.”

“I would really like the opportunity to grapple against St-Pierre, it would be a gigantic honor. I admire and respect him a lot. We’ve met and took a picture together, he said he was also watching me fight, so that would be great.”

GSP hasn’t fought since 2017

GSP is universally acknowledged as the greatest welterweight in MMA history. After securing the 185-pound championship by defeating Michael Bisping at Madison Square Garden in 2017, he chose to retire from the sport and has not returned to competition since.

Oliveira has ventured into grappling competitions in Brazil over the recent years, and he was on the schedule for another bout in August. However, his plans shifted when he secured a rematch with Islam Makhachev, set for October 21 in Abu Dhabi.

Charles Oliveira can be a great opponent for GSP

Oliveira boasts an unparalleled record in the UFC, claiming the title for the most submission wins with an impressive 16 victories. Throughout his career, he has successfully submitted notable fighters such as Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Kevin Lee, and Jim Miller. In contrast, St-Pierre, during his illustrious UFC tenure, secured submission victories over three opponents, including Matt Hughes, Frank Trigg, and Michael Bisping.

In the event that a matchup with St-Pierre doesn’t materialize, the Chute Boxe talent remains open to the possibility of grappling with another opponent in Las Vegas.

“Either him or any other person, it would be great for me because it’s good to be in rhythm,” Oliveira said. “I like to stay active. And like I said, it would be wonderful if it’s against St-Pierre.”
