The question of who stands as the ultimate UFC middleweight in history inevitably leads to one name: former 185-pound champion Anderson Silva. His credentials in the division are undeniable, boasting numerous records such as the most finishes (11), most knockouts (8), most knockdowns landed (13), most title fight wins (11), total fight night bonuses (12), and the longest win streak (13).

In contrast, Israel Adesanya’s middleweight records are less extensive, with just one to his name: the longest average fight time, clocking in at 17 minutes and 49 seconds.

Anderson Silva doesn’t think Adesanya is the greatest

The debate extends beyond mere statistics, yet it seems that the Hall of Fame fighter, Anderson Silva, has reservations about “The Last Stylebender,” Israel Adesanya, claiming the title of the greatest of all time. This sentiment is especially pronounced following Adesanya’s recent title loss to Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 last weekend in Sydney.

“I’m the one in charge of this s—t here, and you’re not going to open your mouth again to compare yourself to me in this s—t,” Silva wrote in a since-deleted Instagram caption (transcribed by Sherdog.com). “Do you understand? I’m the one in charge of this s—t here.”

Michael Bisping voices his opinion

Michael Bisping has voiced his perspective, emphasizing that Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya are exceptional fighters from distinct eras. While Adesanya did secure a victory in their encounter, Bisping cautions against placing excessive importance on that particular bout.

This perspective is not meant as a slight to Adesanya but rather acknowledges the greatness of both fighters. At present, without a doubt, Anderson Silva stands as the unquestionable greatest middleweight of all time. However, Adesanya, at just 34 years old, remains in his prime and maintains an active fighting schedule, holding the potential to further shape his legacy.

Adesanya (24-3) secured a unanimous decision victory over Silva (34-11, 1 NC) at UFC 234. It’s worth highlighting that Silva, aged 44 during their encounter, was already experiencing a noticeable decline in his fighting career, while Adesanya, at 30, was in his prime. Subsequently, “The Spider” was released from the UFC the following year, transitioning to the realm of boxing.
