With merely five days remaining until his fourth bantamweight title defense at UFC 292, Aljamain Sterling’s body fat composition has dwindled to single-digit figures. Following an intense training session on Monday, Sterling’s weight clocked in at 149 pounds, a drop from the morning’s reading of 152 pounds on the scale – a detail he disclosed during his appearance on The MMA Hour.

During his younger years, a customary weight cut during fight week spanned a range of 20 to 25 pounds. “Back then,” he recalled, I would just compete like just an animal, like an Energizer bunny for days.”

Now, he added, “I kind of feel like I’m slowing down a little bit, and that comes with age.”

Is this Sterling’s last fight at 135lbs?

A mere fortnight prior, Sterling commemorated his 34th birthday, coinciding with the most arduous phase of his training regimen in preparation to square off against Sean O’Malley. Amidst this juncture, a longstanding notion regarding the course of his career crystallized with greater clarity.

“This is more than likely my last fight at 135,” Sterling announced. “There’s a 99 percent chance it’s my last. “If I win this, for sure, I’m out of here.”

Within that single percentage, Sterling allots room for the enigmatic variables inherent to the fight arena. This exact fraction is also where he places his conviction for a triumph come Saturday night. According to Sterling, O’Malley possesses merely a “puncher’s chance,” falling significantly short in grappling prowess compared to his own.

What’s next for Aljamain Sterling?

Subsequently, Sterling envisions a pathway where he could potentially join the exclusive ranks of UFC athletes who have achieved the coveted champ-champ distinction. Engaging in a bout against the featherweight titleholder, Alexander Volkanovski, holds the potential to be a substantial achievement, adding a significant accolade to his already impressive repertoire.

Yet, the ultimate decision rests within the jurisdiction of the UFC. For this scenario to materialize, the promotion would need to extend his tenure as the bantamweight champion, a prospect that hasn’t always aligned with his views on management.

Even the declaration of his impending face-off against O’Malley, who, in his view, has seemingly benefited from a “Dana White privilege” shortcut to a title opportunity, was accompanied by its own share of theatrics. Sterling discovered the official confirmation through the media, marking a two-month turnaround period that necessitated another grueling weight reduction process.
