With impressive performances, Yannick Hanfmann defeated fellow countryman Maximilian Marterer and the gifted Arthur Cazaux 6-2, 6-4 to qualify for the Madrid Masters main draw. Hanfmann made his debut at the Madrid Masters, and it must have been a relief to succeed after his previous Masters-level campaign in Miami two months prior had ended in the qualifying rounds in QR1. The German will compete in only his second main-draw Masters event on Wednesday; his first appearance was at the Miami Masters in 2021. He won the opening round match against Steve Johnson at that event in straight sets.
In 2023, Juan Pablo Varillas has also triumphed in more than ten matches played on clay. Except for his impressive run to the semifinals in Buenos Aires during the South American clay swing two months ago, he hasn’t had many notable accomplishments on the main tour. The #1 Peruvian has lost six straight games to German opponents. Two of these defeats—against Jan Lennard Struff at the Monte Carlo Masters and Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open—took place this year.
