Leylah Annie Fernandez is a professional tennis player from Canada. She attained a career-high ranking of No. 13 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on August 8, 2022. Fernandez claimed her first WTA Tour victory in the Monterrey Open in 2021. As a 19-year-old, she finished runner-up to fellow teenager Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open, defeating three top-5 players en route to the final, including defending winner Naomi Osaka. At the moment, the Canadian has two WTA singles titles to her record and she will surely g on to become one of the best in the world.
Fernandez started 2021 without a win in her first four tournaments. However, at the Monterrey Open in March, she won her first four matches to reach the final, where she defeated Viktorija Golubic to win her first WTA title. She was the youngest player in the main draw at 18 years old, and she won the tournament without dropping a set. She won her second WTA championship in 2022 after successfully defending her Monterrey Open title. Fernandez reached the final by defeating Anna Karolna Schmiedlová, Zheng Qinwen, Wang Qiang, and Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets, saving five championship points in the third set.
While Leylah is open about her personal life, there is no evidence that she is currently in a relationship. Leylah became the lone teen on the women’s side to make it to the fourth round, joining British teen sensation Emma Raducanu, who also made it to the fourth round before both teens played the Grand Slam finals, marking the first time in decades that an all-teen final was played in New York. Raducanu won the title in straight sets over Leylah.
Jorge and Irene Fernandez gave birth to Leylah on September 6, 2002 in Montreal, Canada. Jorge was born in Ecuador but came to Canada with his family when he was four years old. He then went on to play professional football for Ecuador in international competitions. Her mother, Irene, is from the Philippines but was born and raised in Canada. Jorge became Leylah’s first tennis coach and continues to do so to this day. He began taking notes from other players’ trainers in order to train a young Leylah throughout her early years. He did not accompany Leylah to the 2021 US Open, but the father-daughter combo claimed that he has been in contact with her during the event.
