Who is Marion Bartoli?

Marion Bartoli is a former professional tennis player from France. Bartoli won the Wimbledon Championships singles title in 2013, after finishing runner-up in 2007. She was also a semifinalist at the 2011 French Open. She also won eight singles and three doubles titles on the WTA Tour. Bartoli was known for her unconventional style of play, which included using both hands on her forehand and backhand. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 7 on January 30, 2012, and returned to this position on July 8, 2013, after winning Wimbledon.

Bartoli advanced to the quarterfinals of all four majors. Her Wimbledon victory made her only the sixth player in Open Era history to win the title without dropping a set. She is also one of only three players in history to have competed in both the WTA Tour Championships and the WTA Tournament of Champions (later renamed the WTA Elite Trophy) in the same year (2011), alongside Kiki Bertens and Sofia Kenin.

Bartoli began coaching former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko at the Linz Open in October 2019. Their collaboration immediately paid off, as Ostapenko reached two finals in two weeks after not reaching a tournament final since March 2018, winning the title in Luxembourg the following week. Marion began working with Ostapenko when she was ranked 76th in the world WTA rankings, and she assisted her in returning to the top 20 WTA. Bartoli and Ostapenko’s partnership ended during the WTA Tour’s suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Bartoli’s pregnancy. Marion remained Ostapenko’s part-time coach after giving birth.
