Victoria Azarenka, a player with a strong track record in Mexico, secured her place in the Guadalajara tournament by defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-1, marking her first victory against the Russian in three encounters. This victory also stands as her most dominant win against a top-20 opponent in terms of games lost since the 2022 Australian Open. Azarenka, a former world No. 1, would likely be relieved to reach the quarterfinals at Guadalajara without dropping a set, as her previous year’s journey to the semifinals required three-set battles against Madison Keys and Coco Gauff. Her best performance in Mexico was reaching the final in Monterrey in 2019.

Caroline Garcia has progressed further in Guadalajara compared to her performance last year. The French player, who has faced challenges in recent months, secured a spot in the quarterfinals after a grueling match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich and a victory over Hailey Baptiste, with the scoreline at 7-5, 6-4. In her match against Sasnovich, Garcia faced two match points and also had to fend off late breakpoints to avoid Sasnovich serving for the second set. This week holds significance for the former world No. 4, as she had experienced first-round exits in four of her last six tournaments. Garcia has a successful history in Mexico, having reached six WTA quarterfinals in the country, all of which she converted into semifinal appearances – twice in Acapulco and four times in Monterrey. She has also been a three-time runner-up in Mexican tournaments, including Monterrey in March.
