Given his poor record on clay and recent lack of confidence, Ugo Humbert was expected to struggle during the clay swing. However, in an astonishing turn of events, the Frenchman defied expectations and displayed impressive performances on the surface, climbing over 30 spots in the ATP rankings in the last two months. In 2019, he competed in his first ATP event on grass in’s-Hertogenbosch. Unfortunately, he was defeated in a closely contested three-set match during the first round by the home crowd favourite, Robin Haase. In subsequent seasons, he chose to compete in Stuttgart, but he is now set to return to’s-Hertogenbosch after missing the tournament.
Jason Kubler made a significant breakthrough on the main tour during last year’s grass swing, which boosted his confidence. This newfound confidence was evident in his recent performance at the Surbiton Challenger, where he defeated two-time former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. Last year, the Australian won nine of a possible 11 matches on grass, earning him a round of 16 result at Wimbledon (as a qualifier) and a semifinal appearance in Newport, both of which played a critical role in elevating his ranking and ultimately securing his position as a top-100 player.
