Tommy Paul ended his three-match losing streak and earned his first ATP clay court victory of the year by defeating Gregoire Barrere in ATP Lyon last week. He was unable to capitalise on that positive result, however, as he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the out-of-form Brandon Nakashima. Earlier this year, he had been putting in consistent performances on the main tour, but his season took an unexpected turn during the clay swing. This is surprising given his previous success on clay, which included winning the Boys’ French Open and performing well in both ITF and Challenger events during his early career.

Dominic Stricker’s game style may be better suited to fast conditions, but he consistently outperforms expectations on clay. In his first appearance on the main tour, he exceeded expectations by reaching the quarterfinals in Geneva. In addition, after a two-month injury layoff, he recently demonstrated his tenacity by winning three consecutive three-set matches to win the Prague Challenger title. However, the talented Swiss youngster, who won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2020 Boys’ French Open, was unable to qualify for the main draw of this year’s French Open and had to rely on a lucky loser spot.
