Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Borna Coric will take place in the quarter-final of the 2023 Italian Open on May 19.
While Stefanos Tsitsipas may not be as hostile to Borna Coric as he is to players like Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev, it is clear that Coric is a player he dislikes facing on the court. Tsitsipas has consistently been frustrated whenever he has faced the Croatian, and notably, he has lost all three of their previous completed knockout matches. Tsitsipas had a difficult day at the Rome Masters on Tuesday because the organisers scheduled him to play two matches, the second of which was late at night. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, Tsitsipas overcame them by winning both matches in straight sets, against Lorenzo Sonego in the third round and Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16.
With all of the other results going in Tsitsipas’ favour so far, failure to win the Rome Masters would be a huge disappointment. He has a distinct advantage over the remaining players in the tournament, as the only one with a previous final appearance in Rome and the only one with a clay Masters title in his career. He is a two-time former Monte Carlo Masters champion and finished second to Novak Djokovic in the most recent Rome Masters in 2022.
Borna Coric has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters without having to face tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz, despite the fact that they were in the same quarter of the draw. The Hungarian pulled off the season’s biggest upset by defeating the Spaniard in straight sets in the third round, only to lose in three sets to the Croatian in the round of 16.
In his last two quarterfinal matches, he had remarkably similar scores, resulting in one win and one loss. He lost six games and 21 points in a row to Daniil Medvedev at this stage of the ATP Dubai in March, then raced to a 6-3 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters a few weeks ago.
