Korda and Sinner will take on each other in the quarter-final of the Adelaide International 1 on January 6.
To defeat Thanasi Kokkinakis, an ATP Adelaide semifinalist (first leg) and champion (second leg) from the previous year, in the second round this week, Jannik Sinner rode luck in the first set and dominated the second. He played poorly in the first set, saving six breakpoints while only earning two on the Australian’s serve (7-6 6-4). The Italian No. 1 had a number of fitness issues throughout the 2022 season, and his performance toward the end of the year raised some questions. He gave up after losing to Holger Rune in Sofia (October) after one game and struggled mightily against Marc-Andrea Huesler in the opening round of the Paris Masters (November).
Sebastian Korda had a much tougher time getting to the semifinals, but he played well to get here without dropping a set. He defeated Roberto Bautista Agut, the current ATP Doha champion, and Andy Murray, the former world number one, 7-6 6-3 and 6-4 6-4, respectively. Due to missed opportunities against Rafael Nadal at the Indian Wells Masters, Frances Tiafoe in Estoril, and former Australian Open Boys’ champion Cameron Norrie in Delray Beach, it was unfortunate that he did not achieve a significant result in the first half of the year. He persisted, though, and in November, he achieved some outstanding results, finishing in second place in Antwerp and Gijon.
