Shelby Rogers is attempting her third main draw victory at the Madrid Open. She only won three games against world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in 2021, and she lost a tough match against Yulia Putintseva last year, 7-5, 7-5. For what it’s worth, she’s never advanced past the first round in Rome (0-3). When it comes to European clay courts, the American has only won the main draw at three tour-level events (Bad Gastein, Roland-Garros, and Strasbourg). She began this year’s clay-court swing in Charleston, where she advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Danielle Collins and Caty McNally in three sets.
Ana Bogdan was eliminated from the tournament after losing the deciding set to Anna Bondar 5-2. She fought for more than three hours to beat the Hungarian, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, with the final set alone taking an hour and a half. It is her second appearance in the main draw and her first trip to the second round in Madrid. Last year, after winning a 125K title on home soil, the Romanian made the most of her time on clay, reaching her first WTA final in Warsaw and the semifinals of 125K Paris and Parma. In contrast, at the start of this week, her only main draw wins of the 2023 season came at one tournament, Dubai, where she reached the third round.

Ana Bogdan has a 1-0 lead. Earlier this season, the two met in the second round of Dubai. The Romanian won 7-6, 6-3 as a qualifier at that WTA 1000 event, preventing the American from serving out the first set and saving both breakpoints in the second. It was her 15th top 50 win of her career and her second in 2023.
