Fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka will face home favourite Sloane Stephens after a first round bye in the last 16 of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open. Her best result came in Germany when she reached the final of the Stuttgart Open where she lost to world no. 1 Iga Swiatek. She reached her second final of the season at the Libema Open but was defeated by Ekaterina Alexandrova. With only a few tournaments left this season, the fifth seed will be desperate for a win.
Sloane Stephens defeated Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann in the first round of the San Diego Open. The American won the first game of the first set and the Swiss responded in kind to levelthe scores at 1-1. However, Stephens went on to win five straight games to take the first set with ease. The Swiss went up 3-1 in the second set to put Stephens in the spot of bother. The American did manage to break her opponent’s momentum but found herself trailing yet again at 5-3. The American, however, managed to stay in contention despite her opponent holding a set point. The match eventually went to a tie-break and Stephens was triumphant by a score of 6-1, 7-6 (2).
