Roberto Carballes Baena won the clay-court competition in Marrakech a few weeks ago, pulling off one of the season’s biggest surprises. Despite having won a championship at a clay-court competition in Quito back in 2018, his early 2023 season struggles with fitness, form, and confidence made his title run in Marrakech a surprising outcome. The world’s 53rd-ranked player felt pressure to demonstrate that his impressive performance in Marrakech was no accident during his subsequent competition. Unfortunately, he fell short of that standard and was defeated in the opening round of the ATP Munich tournament by the underdog Marcos Giron in three sets.
After getting hurt in Marseille earlier this year, David Goffin missed several weeks of action. Since then, his performances have been concerning. In two out of three matches at Monte Carlo and Barcelona, he lost in straight sets to Diego Schwartzman and Yoshihito Nishioka. He also lost a set to Feliciano Lopez, 41, in the opening round of the ATP Barcelona tournament. Since the pandemic break in 2020, the former world No. 7 has not been performing at anything close to his peak. As a result, he is currently in danger of falling out of the top 100 in the ATP rankings, a place he hasn’t occupied since 2014.
