Karolina Pliskova and Venus Williams are scheduled to face one another in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Monday, August 15.

Before entering the Canadian Open, Karolina Pliskova’s season had become a distant memory, with the Czech having won only 10 matches to her 12 losses. However, victories over Barbora Krejcikova, Amanda Anisimova, Maria Sakkari, and Qinwen Zheng propelled the world number 14 to the semifinals of her second US Open Series tournament before falling to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the last four stages. Pliskova put up a valiant fight against her Brazilian opponent, but she was defeated in straight sets. Pliskova had previously lost to Anisimova in the second round of the San Jose Open. There have been three previous meetings between these two, with Pliskova holding a 2-1 advantage.
Venus Williams has yet to win another match since winning the first round of the 2021 Wimbledon. She had lost in the second round there before ending her season in August with a first-round loss in Chicago. Venus has only competed in two tournaments this season, both of which she lost in the first round. Venus was defeated in three sets by Rebecca Marino at the Washington Open before being defeated in two sets by Jil Teichmann in Toronto last week. Now, as she takes the court for another opener, she hopes to find a rhythm before the US Open. Venus Williams won their first meeting at the WTA Elite Trophy in 2015, but Pliskova has dominated since then.

The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
