Pedro Cachin is making his return to the Madrid Masters five years after failing to qualify in his first attempt in 2018. He has a direct entry into the main draw as the world #67 this time around. His current ranking in the ATP is due to his outstanding performances on both the Challenger and main tour circuits last year. Towards the end of 2022, the Argentine gained some valuable experience on the main tour. He was unable to use it in 2023, however, because he struggled to win in familiar conditions during the South American clay swing earlier this year. He has a win-loss record of 10/14 at all levels in the last four months.
Abedallah Shelbayh made his mark in the main draw of tour-level events in Banja Luka last week in only his second attempt. He defeated Fabian Marozsan and Lukas Klein in the qualifying rounds before defeating Elias Ymer in the first round of the tournament in straight sets. The Jordanian, who is only the second player from his country to win a main-draw match on the main tour, has performed admirably in both of his previous seasons at this level. He made his ATP debut a few months ago in Doha, where he forced a deciding set against reigning ATP Adelaide champion Soon Woo Kwon in the first round.
