Paula Badosa vs Jelena Ostapenko will take place in the quarter-final of the 2023 Italian Open on May 17.
After her match was postponed overnight due to rain, Paula Badosa was the last to reach the quarterfinals. She endured a three-hour marathon against former world No. 19 Karolina Muchova before defeating the Czech 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. She faced no breakpoints in the third set, which lasted nearly an hour and a half. Last year, the Spaniard was unable to win more than one match in her Italian Open debut. In contrast, she has now advanced four rounds after spending eight hours and 23 minutes on the court, including straight-set victories over fellow former world No. 2 Ons Jabeur and a third-set tiebreak victory over qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam.
Jelena Ostapenko advances to the Rome quarterfinals for the third time in her career. She faced longtime rival Daria Kasatkina and won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 with a flawless final set in under 30 minutes. It was only her second top-ten win in nearly 15 months (the other coming from Coco Gauff in Melbourne) and her first on clay since the 2020 Roland-Garros. Her previous two quarterfinals in this tournament were decided in three sets. In 2018, she was defeated by three-time champion Maria Sharapova in three hours and ten minutes, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. After wasting three match points in the return game, she was defeated 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 by 2019 champion Karolina Pliskova in her 2021 bid.
